What is Chiropractic Care?
Last year nearly half a million Albertans found relief from pain and discomfort and led a healthier, more fulfilling life as a result of visiting a chiropractor. When joints lose their normal position or motion, tissues and nerves can become irritated. If a thorough examination reveals malfunctioning areas of the spine, a chiropractic adjustment can help correct the dysfunction.
After completing an undergraduate degree, Alberta Doctors of Chiropractic will have completed an additional three to four year curriculum of over 4,500 hours of specialized instruction and hands-on training at an accredited Chiropractic College. Finally, in order to earn the privilege to practice they must pass National Board and Clinical Competency Exams. In Alberta, Chiropractors are a regulated health profession, governed by legislation and required to comply with standards of practice as laid out by the College of Chiropractors of Alberta.
Chiropractic is firmly grounded in science and endorsed by research. Few other health care interventions have been assessed as extensively and rigorously as chiropractic. A number of studies confirm that it is one of the safest and most effective methods of health care available, and that patient satisfaction is consistently high.
Research findings have changed the attitudes of many physicians. Increasing numbers of medical doctors and health care providers now recognize the benefits of chiropractic care, and many refer their patients to chiropractors.
